7 Helpful Ways to Be a Good Tourist

Traveling is a wonderful way to explore new places, meet new people and learn more about a new culture. You can experience so many different things that it can be a revelation. Of course, don’t forget that you are also representing your country and you want to create a good impression on the locals. Hence, you must focus on being a good tourist.

Here are a few tips to help you understand what it takes to be a good tourist.

1. Use Your Travel to Benefit the Local Economy

When you visit a place as a tourist, give back something to the local community. The best way to go about it is to fraternize local businesses. Rather than staying in a hotel chain, opt for a homestay or independent hotel; buy things from local businesses and look to eat in local restaurants. Undertaking these endeavors will not only help you support local communities in your own way, but it will allow you to get a unique perspective about the place and its people.

2. Learn Basic Phrases and Sentences

When you travel to a new country, don’t expect people to understand you and try and accommodate your needs. Instead, you have to make an effort to communicate with the locals in their language. It demonstrates that you are eager to be in their country and they will show their appreciation by helping you out. So, spend a little time before you leave to check out a pocket translator and learn a few phrases and sentences that will allow you to interact with people on a daily basis.

3. Mix with the Locals

The best way to learn the local culture is through food. So, instead of walking into a high-end restaurant or a fast-food outlet, look for streetside restaurants and cafes that locals frequent. It will be an enriching experience and many locals will end up chatting with you. They will tell you about local legends and myths while spending time to learn about your life and country. They will also tell you about the lesser-known attractions that you can visit. There is no better way to get a one-of-a-kind vacation experience than this.

4. Dress Based on the Local Culture

Do some research about the place you are visiting to find out how the locals dress. While you are not expected to dress just like a local, it will help if you dress as per the expected norms. If the culture is more traditional, you will stand out like a sore thumb in shorts and tees. Dressing up to suit the local sensibilities will be highly appreciated by the people of the place. Many times, solo female travelers find this the best way to ward off unwanted attention from the local men.

5. Go Beyond the Obvious Attractions

The places you visit will always have attractions that are extremely popular with tourists. However, as a good tourist, you should be looking for more than just these attractions. Explore and get out of your comfort zone so that you can imbibe the true spirit and essence of the place. Look to go to the local market, sign up for a local cooking class or take up an invitation to dine with a local family. These experiences are priceless and help you connect with the local community.

6. Break Stereotypes

You may have preconceived notions about the place and its people. Do not let that overtake you as it will affect the way you interact with the locals. Instead, break the stereotypes and learn to appreciate the local culture and tradition and try to blend in. It will give you a better perspective about the place and people and help you have a more fun-filled and fulfilling vacation. Also, the way you behave and carry yourself will allow you to break the misconception the locals have about your country folks. So, it is a win-win situation for everyone.

7. Be Cooperative with authorities

During any health emergency overseas, always cooperate with the local authorities. Remember, they are trying to prevent the spread of infection from you to others and vice versa. If you get isolated or quarantined during your vacation, it can be frustrating as you will not be able to do all the things on your itinerary. However, remember that it is for your own and the local community’s good. Keep your ears open for local health advisories and act accordingly. Also, follow the health tips provided by the local government so that you can protect yourself and others around you.

These are some of the ways to be a good tourist and help local communities you are visiting. It allows you to have a superior experience, one that you will cherish for a long time to come.
