Liberty Bell
An icon of American independence, it had cracked when rung for the first time. It was recast twice by two local workmen whose last names still appear inscribed on the bell. It was originally used to summon law makers to their legislative sessions and to call the locals for public meetings. The Liberty Bell became famous when an aged bell ringer used it on July 4, 1776 to proclaim the Second Continental Congress's vote for independence. It functioned as a symbol of freedom at the time of the Cold War. The area adjoining the bell and was a popular venue for holding protests during the 1960s. It was later transferred to a glass pavilion situated in Independence Mall in 1976.
Philadelphia Museum of Art
It is the largest art museum of its kind in the United States. It homes over 227,000 objects which include world famous European and American paintings, design prints, rare drawings, and various decorative arts. The museum also supports around 25 special exhibitions each year.
Philadelphia Zoo
It was the first zoo to be built in the United States. The 42 acre premier zoo is renowned for breeding various animal species which find it difficult to breed in captivity. The zoo works with various animal conservation groups to preserve and protect the natural habitats of various animals kept under special care. The zoo homes 1,300 animals and supports the upkeep of many rare and endangered species. The zoo also features a small children's zoo, a magnificent balloon ride, a lake, a carousel, and many other interactive educational exhibits.
Academy of Natural Sciences
Formerly known as the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, it is the oldest natural science research institute as well as a museum. Originally founded in 1812 by leading naturalists, it supports a mission of encouraging and cultivating various fields of sciences. The institute displays exhibits and educational programs.
