Every once in a while you will read about norovirus cases on cruise ships. It can be frightening if you are contemplating a cruise. While cruise ships are not infested with germs as the staff is extremely careful about hygiene and cleanliness, you can still get sick if another person on the ship has a contagious illness. However, there are ways to ensure you stay in the pink of health throughout your cruise. Just follow these simple yet important tips.

9 Tips on How to Not Get Seasick on a Cruise

1. Get Your Flu Vaccination

If you are going on a cruise, don’t disregard the flu shot. You will be in close contact with complete strangers and one bout of flu can infect all the passengers. Hence, get the year’s current flu shot before you go on your cruise. Aim to get the shot at least two weeks before you board the ship. This way, the vaccination will have time to build up antibodies in your body.

2. Eat with Care

Remember, it is normal to be a little seasick before you get your sea legs. So, when you board the ship, go easy on the food for the first two days. You can take Dramamine to ease the seasickness but go for food that is easy to digest so that your nausea, if any, does not exacerbate. Opt for light and small meals throughout the day to keep nausea and queasiness at bay. Fruits and toast are something that you should be eating the first couple of day until you get used to the rolling of the ship.

3. Wash Your Hands

After you touch anything on the ship, make it a point to nicely scrub your hands with soap and water. If you cannot, keep hand sanitizer handy. Disinfect your hands regularly. You will find hand sanitizer dispensers at the doorway of all dining rooms and around the ship. Use the dispensers throughout the day to keep your hands germ-free.

4. Sanitize Your Cabin

While the cabins are cleaned, you may want to take additional precaution. Carry anti-bacterial wipes with you and disinfect things that people touch, like the light switches, desks, telephone, and TV remote.

5. Consume Bottled Water

All cruise ships have a filter for water. However, if you are worried about the water being contaminated, stick to bottled water. Also, make sure when you are going for shore excursions, you carry a bottle with you so that you don’t have to rely on water in the ports of call.

6. Avoid Buffets

Cruise ships always serve a buffet spread and the most popular is the midnight buffet. However, if you want to stay healthy during your cruise trip, avoid buffets. Not because they are unhealthy, but because the serving utensils are used by several passengers. If you cannot resist the buffet, re-sanitize your hands before you begin eating. The same also holds true when you use self-serve beverages and ice cream dispensers.

7. Stay Hydrated

It is easy to lose track of time and not drink enough water. If you get dehydrated, it will adversely affect your immune system. So, make it a point to drink water after each meal and during the time you are enjoying activities.

8. Apply Sunscreen

The cool ocean breeze will not protect you from the harsh rays of the sun. So, make sure if you are spending time on the top deck, you slather your body with sunscreen. Opt for a high SPF sunscreen to avoid getting sunburned.

9. Stay Away from Sick Passengers

If you notice a person who is coughing or vomiting, it is best to alert a crew member and give a wide berth to the passenger. While the person may just be seasick, it is best to take precautions just in case.

These are a few tips you can adopt during a cruise to have an illness-free time.
